Uncovering the Doctrine of Discovery:
Ethics, Law, and Indigenous Responsibility

Sunday, February 1, 11:00am - 12:15pm

In this talk, Betty Lyons Hill (Onondaga Nation, Snipe Clan) examines how the Doctrine of Christian Discovery continues to shape law, policy, and public ethics in the United States and beyond. Rooted in fifteenth-century church decrees, this doctrine framed non-Christian lands and peoples as available for domination, extraction, and control. Its legacy still appears in property law, environmental harm, and the ongoing denial of Indigenous sovereignty. Speaking from the lived experience of the Onondaga Nation, Betty Lyons connects this history to present-day struggles over land, water, and responsibility, including the desecration and restoration efforts surrounding Onondaga Lake.

Community lunch follows, free for first-time guests!

You can also attend virtually.

Calling-In 101 and Practice Workshop

In the wake of uprisings around the country, do you feel urgency around calling your friends, family members, and community into the movement for racial justice? Calling in workshops are designed to help us do exactly that: to improve participants' ability to engage in conversations around race, racism, and police brutality.

We will develop skills to move other white people into action by “calling in” instead of “calling out.” We will define white fragility, learn tactics to shape conversations, and then apply those lessons to practice scenarios. Participants should leave the workshop with tools for calling more white people into the movement for racial justice.

This Zoom meeting will be small and highly participatory, with breakout groups and other opportunities to connect with participants, who should be fully present and on video. Spots are limited, so please register in advance. More workshops will be announced shortly and included in the SURJ NYC events calendar.
